Let's start with the good news. If you haven't held any personal American Express card in the past twenty-four months, you're what we affectionately call an 'Amex virgin' - and that means you're eligible for every single bonus out there. Pretty exciting, right?

Now, if you have held an Amex card recently, things get a bit more interesting. Let me break down the cards you typically can't get a bonus on if you've had any Amex in the past twenty-four months: the Cashback cards, basic British Airways card, Gold card, Marriott Bonvoy card, Nectar card, and the basic Rewards card.

But don't worry - there's still hope! You might be eligible for some premium card bonuses, including The Platinum Card, which is currently offering an incredible one hundred thousand Membership Rewards points until May twenty-seventh, two thousand and twenty-five. There's also the British Airways Premium Plus card with a thirty thousand Avios sign-up bonus.

Here's something really exciting for business owners - American Express made a significant rule change in two thousand and twenty-four. Business cards now operate under more flexible rules, meaning you can get welcome bonuses on the Business Gold and Business Platinum regardless of your other card history.

Just a quick note about income requirements - you'll need to be earning thirty-five thousand pounds or more annually for The Platinum Card, Business Platinum, and BA Premium Plus. For other cards, it's twenty thousand pounds per year.

If you're planning your card strategy, I'd recommend starting with either the Marriott Bonvoy, Nectar, or one of the cashback cards. Then move on to either The Platinum Card or BA Premium Plus, and finally, grab whichever premium card you didn't choose in step two.
